Courthouses, Mississippi County courthouses at Blytheville and Osceola, Spring 1963 [Driver marker] [graphic] / Ernie Deane [photographer]. 1963.

Negative taken for March 31, 1963, Arkansas Gazette article "Another 'Two-courthouse' County," 5E:2. Mississippi County has two courthouses, one at Blytheville (1682.03, 1682.08, 1682.10), and the other at Osceola (1685.07). The Mississippi County Courthouse at Osceola has two markers on its lawn. One is a plaque that honors William Joshua Driver, a member of the Arkansas state legislature, state court judge, and a United States Representative from the Arkansas 1st District (1682.12), and the other marker commemorates the first Mississippi County Courthouse that was built in Osceola (1682.11). MOnument reads, "In memory of the honorable William J. Driver, former circuit judge and congressman. A lifelong citizen of Osceola, Arkansas, born March 2, 1873, died October 1, 1948. As a member of the rivers and harbors and flood control committees of the Congress of the United States, he shaped and, by his superb leadership, caused the enactment of laws which curbed the mighty Mississippi, the St. Francis and other rivers of this area and minimized the danger of devastating floods. Recognized as the foremost authority on drainage and flood control, he was the St. Francis basin's most valued citizen. His life was so gentle, and the elements so mixed in him, that nature might stand up and say to all the world, "This was a man." Elected by the people of the St. Francis basin and the Osceola Bar Association August 11, 1959 A.D."
